CROWNS
Forgive the pun, but many of us really put our teeth through quite a grind. As we age, our teeth will change. All that chewing, gnashing and sometimes grinding (technically referred to as "bruxism") takes a toll. Also, our teeth are prone to decay. Add in cracked filings and root canals, and it’s not uncommon for a person to have a tooth reach a point of being beyond repair with a filling. But that doesn’t mean that tooth is a lost cause. The tooth can be saved through a full crown. Restoration through a crown adds durability, improves your cosmetic appearance and bolsters the overall support of your bite. Through placing a crown, we essentially mold your old tooth to be used as a base upon which to place the crown. Your “new” tooth will be virtually unnoticeable and will flawlessly complement the rest of your smile.
Types of Crowns If you need a full crown, there are a few options for repairing your tooth: a full porcelain crown, porcelain fused to a metal or gold crown, or a full gold crown. We’ll point you in the right direction to determine which option is best for you. Procedure Plan on two to three office visits for the entire process. Most crowns are completed in two visits, but sometimes a third appointment is needed to assure a proper fit. 1. The decay in the old tooth must be removed. 2. We’ll then take an impression of the tooth, which will be sent to our lab where your crown will be made. 3. We will provide you with a temporary crown that resembles your natural teeth. You can go about your daily life without worrying about a missing or incompatible tooth. 4. The second visit is usually less evasive as we proceed toward placing your permanent crown. We want the crown to fit comfortably in your mouth, and we will make every effort to ensure it feels exactly like one of your natural teeth. 5. The final step in the process is to cement the crown, leaving with a healthy bite and beautifully restored smile.
